Frequently Asked Questions
What is an accent?
An accent is the way someone pronounces words when they speak. It’s influenced by where they grew up, what languages they know, and sometimes even the people they spend time with. Accents can affect sounds, rhythm, and intonation . Everyone has an accent, and there is no such thing as a “bad” accent. An accent may affect how other people understand you, however.
Why is English hard to pronounce for some people?
A lot of times, those who learn English as a second language are not taught English pronunciation. They may learn the words and the grammar of the English language, but they may not receive enough training in how to speak English with confidence. English has many more sounds than some other languages. This means someone who has learned to speak English may also have to learn new sounds. In spoken English, words are often connected during speech and this is different from many other languages. English has a unique rhythm that makes it very different from other languages. This often isn’t taught when people learn English as a second language.
There are many different types of English. What type of English pronunciation can I learn from you?
At ProNounce Speech and Accent Specialists, we teach the general American English accent. General American English is a widely understood American accent that is neutral and not associated with any particular area in the United States. It’s the American accent used most often in the entertainment and communication industries. This means that it’s common and people are used to hearing it.
The rules are more clear than any other English accent, which makes it easier to learn.
What happens during the speech assessment?
You’ll discover that the assessment is a relaxed and judgment-free process. People find that there is nothing to be nervous about. The assessment will be like talking to a new friend.
Assessments are conducted via Zoom. We’ll spend a few minutes getting to know you. We’ll talk about your goals and what you hope to accomplish. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions. Don’t worry about making mistakes when speaking or trying to speak “better” than you usually do. Just be yourself.
You will be doing a lot of talking during the assessment. You will be asked to read out loud, repeat some words and sentences, and engage in conversation with our accent specialist. Afterwards, the accent specialist will talk to you about the notable differences between your current accent and the general American accent, and how these differences may be affecting your communication. The accent specialist will structure a lesson plan for you and explain how you will work together to overcome these differences. People often see quick, noticeable results in just a few sessions.
